Throughout Anderson’s history, the marching band has always been a source of pride, making small but mighty victories at each competition that they’ve performed in. The years of hard work and dedication from each of the members undoubtedly shows in each piece that they execute. Taking first place is nothing new to them as they are a division A group.
This was proven when they made history at the Carlson Spectacular Spectacular on 14 September. Never before has the Southgate band taken a clean sweep, winning in each category during a competition. They took first place with their show “The Burnt Toast Theory,” receiving an overall score of 84.4. The wins in best percussion, marching, music, and guard attributed to them claiming the highest score in their flight. Due to this display of absolute talent, they took home the ‘spectacular spectacular best in show’ award for having the best score out of any group (regardless of division).
The essence of the show is a very interesting and striking concept, both visually and melodically. The Burnt Toast Theory is a three part production about “how the time it takes to make another slice of toast when you burn one, could change your life by making you miss an accident or causing you to accidentally bump into the love of your life.” as described by Colton Titus, a sophomore trombone player. The first part is meant to convey the action of the toast burning; this is done by having lots of chord building and intense undertones transitioning into a calmer melody as it becomes apparent to the audience that there is an upside to the toast conundrum. At the time of writing, the third and final part is still in the works, though I believe it will be a fantastic end to an already fine production.
